Steve Gallagher

Steve Gallagher is the Chief Information Officer of Stanford University. He leads University IT, a world-class technology services organization that partners with faculty, students, staff, and alumni to deliver human-centric information and support services that power Stanford’s unparalleled learning, research, and healthcare mission.

UIT manages Stanford’s enterprise business applications, collaboration technology, data warehouse, business intelligence, network engineering, telecommunications, web services, client services, and advancement systems. As CIO, Steve jointly leads the Information Security Office, as well as the Stanford Research Computing group. 

He also co-chairs the Stanford CIO Council, composed of the senior-most technical leaders on campus. The council provides advice and counsel on university-wide technology strategy and direction, and promotes university-wide access to data, information, and knowledge.

Steve serves as a member of the Stanford University Cabinet, the SLAC National Laboratory Board of Oversight Operations Committee, Stanford Open Access Committee, and the Stanford University Press Governing Board. Across higher education, Steve is a member of the Ivy Plus CIO board and the Research University CIO Conclave (RUCC). 

Steve has extensive experience in higher education, having served as CIO of the Harvard Business School and as CIO of the University of San Francisco. He previously held executive leadership roles in the venture capital and financial technology sectors in San Francisco, New York, and Boston.

Education

Steve received his bachelor’s degree from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and an MBA from Harvard University.
